It’s like you’ve been invited to an hour-and-a-half dinner with the family you haven’t seen since 2002.

Set in present-day Chicago, the film finds Toula (Vardalos) and her nice-guy husband Ian (John Corbett, still best known as Sex and the City’s Aidan) are still living next-door to Toula’s extensive Greek-American family, who retain their habit of popping round en masse at inopportune moments.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 is the highly anticipated follow-up to the highest-grossing romantic comedy of all time.

Vardalos will again reprise her memorable role as Toula. Then and now, Vardalos has created opportunities for herself, and she’s not unappealing as the eye of Her Big Fat Greek Maelstrom. I was not entirely reluctant to catch up with the Portokalos clan, a sprawling and brawling immigrant family led by Windex-obsessed patriarch Gus (Michael Constantine), who is the plot engine this time thanks to his discovery that his 50-year marriage to Maria (Lainie Kazan) was never legal. Well, Toula’s already married, and Paris is too young.

Fourteen years have passed and the sequel to My Big Fat Greek Wedding – the creatively titled My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 – has belatedly arrived, with, as unbelievable as this may sound, even more sitcom contrivances and one-note jokes.
