Franklin’s head was about the only thing Kiermaier hit all day.

Forsythe hit his fifth homer in his last 13 games off Luis Perdomo (5-7) to put the Rays up 3-1 in the second. Hopefully he’s OK, and his teammates will realize who is around them in the on-deck circle from now on.

“It comes down to me”, Myers said. A single and two walks loaded the bases, and Maile cleared them with a double down the left-field line for a 3-0 lead.Padres starter Edwin Jackson, who played for the Rays for three years and later threw a no-hitter against them in 2010, got into more trouble in the third, giving up four runs on five hits.

Wil Myers has some great memories at Tropicana Field. Nick Franklin and Miller had two-run home runs in the fifth, Corey Dickerson added a solo shot in the sixth and Evan Longoria hit his team-best 27th, a two-run shot, in the seventh.

“Really like the way Arch pitched, he was outstanding”, Rays manager Kevin Cash said. “I’m not concerned at all”, he said. “I pretty much single-handily sucked the soul out of the team”. It was his fifth game since being activated from the disabled list with an injury to the same tendon.

Longoria holds the franchise mark in a number of offensive categories including homers, RBIs and extra-base hits. “I don’t think he could be a better face and ambassador for this organization”.

The Rays plan to discuss Wednesday the next step for RHP Chase Whitley, one of two pitchers nearing a return from Tommy John surgery. Expected to be a September call-up, Whitley allowed two runs over 21 innings in six minor league starts.

But the right-hander was out of this one in a hurry and didn’t get much help from the Padres, who gave up 15 runs for the fourth time this season.

Rays: 2B Logan Forsythe was scratched from the lineup due to back spasms.
