Mystery of Tombstone Found at NJ Transit Bus Terminal Solved

The mysterious gravestone found by a maintenance worker at an Essex County bus terminal earlier this month belongs to a dog, not a child as initially believed, police said.

Max Ferriera was Agostino Ferriera’s Rottweiler.

It’s still unclear where Max is buried or how his headstone ended up at the terminal, cops said.

According to police, Agostino Ferreira moved from his Parker Street home to Florida in 2004, and died in 2005.

On August. 3, Nutley police responded to the NJ Transit bus terminal on Washington Avenue after an employee found the engraved marker.

Nutley police alerted surrounding agencies are inquired at area cemeteries. Authorities were looking into which cemetery may have been missing a headstone, which read “Max Ferreira, born June 16, 1990, died September 29, 1998”.

“Until we can determine how and why this headstone was left, we can only speculate that it was removed from a human grave”, Nutley Police Chief Thomas Strumolo stated at the time.
