N. Korea closing communication channel with USA over THAAD

However, South Korea’s defense ministry says that most of the ballistic missiles targeting the capital are Scud missiles that fly at an altitude of less than 40 kilometers, and that THAAD is only able to intercept missiles that fly at higher than 40 kilometers.

North Korea conducted its latest test of a submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) a day after the announcement of the THAAD deployment.

The THAAD decision has drawn strong reactions from the public, but on Wednesday the South Korean defense minister said the anti-missile defense system might also be removed if the North Korean nuclear issue is resolved, local news service Newsis reported.

South Korean President Park Guen-hye said Monday that the THAAD system is only intended as a defensive measure against the North. She said it does not target any other country.

“When planning the implementation of its missile defense program in South Korea, the United States proceeded from its globalist schemes related to Russian Federation and China, namely, Washington wanted to undermine the nuclear deterrence of these two countries”.

North Korea’s military has also threatened to take “physical action” in response to the deployment of the missile system on the Korean peninsula.

It will be used “to protect alliance military forces”, Seoul and Washington said on Friday.

Deploying THAAD at Seongju would help “more firmly secure the safety of our people in one-half to two-thirds of South Korea’s entire territory”, South Korea’s Defense Ministry said in a statement quoted by the Yonhap news agency.

In comments to reporters, Kirby called on North Korea “to refrain from actions and rhetoric that only further raise tensions in the region”, but said he would not comment on the details of diplomatic exchanges.

Some reports quoted officials from South Korea as saying that authorities would round up on a site for the deployment of the THAAD wishing weeks and that they were working to make it operational by the end of 2017.

Now it will deal with “DPRK-US relations under the wartime law of the DPRK”, according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), North Korea’s state-run news agency.

Last week’s decision to deploy the Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense system, known as THAAD, on the divided peninsula has angered Pyongyang and China.

About 28,500 USA servicemembers are stationed in South Korea, which remains technically at war with the North after the 1950-53 conflict ended with an armistice instead of a peace treaty.

“The Republic will handle all matters arising between us and the United States from now on under our wartime laws, and the matters of Americans detained are no exception to this”.

North Korea warned Monday that it would take “physical” retaliation measures once the location for THAAD was determined.

He added that even if there was no North Korea, the Americans would have come up with something else, something that Zhebin said has clearly been confirmed by the example of Europe.
