State Secretary John Kerry is to travel to Switzerland, Saudi Arabia, Laos, Cambodia and China – where he’s expected to hold talks on responses to North Korea with officials in Beijing.

North Korea claims to have completed a successful test of a hydrogen bomb on Wednesday, January 6th.

While waiting to see what kind of new sanctions might be imposed by the United States, the United Nations and others, North Korean officials say that with the test now out of the way they want the US and its allies to back off and allow them to turn their attention toward peaceful economic growth, as promised by leader Kim Jong Un in his New Year address. North Korea last week conducted its fourth nuclear test, prompting near universal condemnation and further raising tensions on the Korean peninsula.
