How much North Korea’s ATMs have actually been used is a matter of debate. The failure of a missile-launch isn’t exactly breaking news for the North, but direly embarrassing is that the disaster had marred the ceremonial grandstanding associated with North Korea’s founder. Experts say North Korea likely already has the capability to hit such targets, though probably not with nuclear weapons. “All stakeholders will bear the consequences, with Pyongyang sure to suffer the greatest losses”.

The nuclear-powered USS Michigan submarine arrived at Busan in what was described as a routine port visit to rest the crew and load supplies. “On the other hand, China has proposed a “double suspension” [of North Korea’s nuclear and missile activities and of the US and South Korea’s joint military exercises] but neither of the parties has been listening”, the editorial said, emphasizing the “difficult situation” in which China finds itself.

President Donald Trump has dispatched to the region what he called an “armada” of ships, including an aircraft carrier, in a show of force.

It has also carried out a series of ballistic missile tests in defiance of United Nations sanctions.

“Our military is closely monitoring the North Korean military’s movement in Wonsan areas and we are firmly maintaining readiness”, South Korea’s Office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said.

“The status quo in North Korea is also unacceptable”, Trump told a meeting with the 15 U.N. Security Council ambassadors, including China and Russian Federation, at the White House.

‘The North Korean government should invest in the welfare of its long-suffering citizens, rather than weapons of mass destruction’. “The council must be prepared to impose additional and stronger sanctions on North Korean nuclear and ballistic missile programmes”.
