Khan’s resignation came after he told the BBC in an interview aired Friday that Islam, head of the military’s powerful spy agency Inter-Services Intelligence, was behind last year’s anti-government rallies organized by cricket star-turned-politician Imran Khan and fiery cleric Tahir-ul-Qadr.

Environment minister Mushahid Ullah Khan submitted his resignation on Saturday, the information minister Pervez Rashid said.

It was not clear whether he would accept it.

Khan in an interview with BBC Urdu service yesterday claimed that the government had tapped a conversation of the former ISI chief which proved that he was part of a conspiracy to bring down the government during street demonstrations in Islamabad past year.

Mushahidullah who had been on trip to Maldives was summoned today for clarification over his non-professional and irresponsible statement in an interview to BBC.

“On the contrary, if Mushahidullah Khan’s allegations are false, action should be initiated against him”, Shireen Mazari said.

He also rejected that ex-ISI chief wanted to grab power.

An official spokesman from the Prime Minister House denied existence of any recorded tape of former ISI Chief as alleged.

The Senator also claimed that the incumbent government had an audio tape obtained by the Intelligence Bureau (IB) in which the former ISI Chief could be heard giving orders to spread chaos with an ultimate objective to overthrow the Nawaz Sharif’s government.

On the other hand, spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s House said that no such tape exists as per Mushahidullah’s claim.

Mr Rashid stated that the claims was far from fact because during the sit-ins, he used to be with the Prime Minister and was fully aware of the information.
