N.W.A. joins quartet of 1970s hitmakers in rock hall
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame announced its 2016 inductees Thursday morning, reports Entertainment Weekly, the list honouring Steve Miller, Cheap Trick, N.W.A., Chicago and Deep Purple.

Edwin Reichert/AP Deep Purple, seen here in 1971, created rock’s ultimate riff in the opening of “Smoke on the Water”.
Steve Miller, who got his start in the 1960s, was on the ballot for the first time this year.
The rap group N.W.A, possibly getting a boost from the biopic Straight Outta Compton, will also be inducted into the Rock Hall on April 8, at a ceremony to be held in NY.
Highlights from the induction ceremony will be broadcast on HBO.
Miller scored a number of hits in the 1970s and 80s, including Take the Money and Run, and Fly Like an Eagle.
The band’s classic tunes include “Surrender”, “I Want You To Want Me”, “Dream Police” and the #1 hit, “The Flame”.
Artists Bun E. Carlos, Rick Nielsen, Tom Petersson and Robin Zander will be honored for their contribution to the music industry as the band Cheap Trick.
Borchetta says of Cheap Trick, “As a band, they’ve never stopped rock’n the free world and they play every night with as much conviction as their first power-pop-punk club shows from the mid ’70’s”.
“I kind of enjoyed having people complain that I wasn’t in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame more than I think I’ll like being in it”, says Miller. We’re extremely excited and happy for that.
Deep Purple has defined the nature of hard rock since its beginnings in the late 1960s, along with compatriots and fellow Hall inductees Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin.
Before they shortened their name from the Chicago Transit Authority, Chicago was known for its jazz-rock fusion. According to a statement issued by the foundation, inductees were “chosen by more than 800 voters of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, as well as the aggregate results of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s online fan vote”.
The influential disco band Chic, fronted by Nile Rodgers, also failed to earn enough votes despite its 10th nomination. Janet Jackson, The Cars, Los Lobos and Yes were among the other nominees rejected.
