NAACP suggests removal of battle flag from Alabama trooper uniforms

“The state of Mississippi now remains the sole state in our country to embrace a symbol of war, hate and a failed attempt to perpetuate its right to slavery, into its flag while regarding it as ‘heritage, ‘ despite inflicting degradation upon its citizen descendants of slaves”, the civil rights organization said in a resolution it adopted Tuesday at its national convention in Pennsylvania.

The South Carolina House of Representatives voted 94-20 to remove the Confederate battle flag from public spaces including state Capitol grounds. The flag ended up being transported to the nearby Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum.

A number of big name companies, such as Ebay and Walmart, have vowed to pull products sporting the flag from their shelves. Henkel says her flag is the American flag, and honoring her family does not make her or others racist.

“So next time, are they going to take that monument down?” Would we be calling for the removal of the American flag? Gov. Nikki Haley’s quick action to bring down the Stars and Bars in the aftermath of the tragedy demonstrated the sensitivity and common sense we expect of our political leaders. This revisionist history is getting a little out of hand.

For me – I am white – the survey results help explain how this flag, a symbol that I associate more with the forces of bigotry and hate than ancestry and heritage, could survive to still be a state symbol in so many places 150 years after the end of the Civil War. The fact that sectional debates and conflicts over states rights occurred because of slavery was de-emphasized. Many people who look like me just didn’t see it “that way”.
