During the match, Djokovic hit first serves around 100 miles per hour, sometimes slower – 25 miles per hour or so below what’s normal for him.
That was one of three intriguing all-American contests Monday.
The 30-year-old’s only grand slam experience of the season was a surprise first-round exit at the Australian Open in January, and he admits he is excited by the prospect of competing at Flushing Meadows for the final major of the year.
A first-round loss by Rio Olympics gold medalist Monica Puig.
“For me personally, the Olympics is the closest thing to a grand slam”, Nadal said. He produced 14 of his 21 winners via his forehand, which showed little sign of being troubled by a wrist he says is still not completely healed.
Nadal’s afternoon match was played with the new $150 million retractable roof open under a blue sky, while offering some extra shade on a day when the temperature reached 90 degrees.
The bad news for Nadal? “There was a tough moment in the middle of the second set, but I think I resisted well and I’m very happy at the victory”, Nadal, who disclosed that his injured wrist is improving daily, said on court. Seppi also needed a pick me up victory after winning just one match since the Wimbledon and getting dominated by Jan-Lennard Struff in Winston Salem.
“Today I can start the forehand, I think my normal forehand, but still needs time to feel that I am more confident on my wrist”.
Both Nadal and his coach, Uncle Toni, described the way Rafael changed the way he hits a forehand during the Rio Games to try to avoid pain. In their fifth ever matchup, No.4 seeded Nadal is a heavy favorite against the No. 107-ranked player. I thought I was smart with the way I played when I needed to be in certain situations.
The two-time US Open champion grew tentative at times on his forehand late in the second set.
The important thing for Nadal, champion in 2010 and 2013, is that the pain is receding slightly every day and against Istomin, he looked solid as he romped into the second round in the kind of blisteringly hot conditions he loves. “(A win like this) gives you more belief, absolutely”. “A lot of short balls”.

“It’s getting better and better each day”, Djokovic said.
