France is on high alert after jihadist attacks in Paris in November left 130 people dead, and is one of many countries taking extra security precautions.
A passenger alerted the crew after finding a suspect package an hour after the Boeing 777 took off. The airliner was diverted to the Kenyan city of Mombasa, where the 459 passengers and 14 crew members used emergency chutes to disembark.
“The plane just went down slowly, slowly, slowly, so we just realised probably something was wrong”, Benoit Lucchini of Paris said.
“The cabin crew told us it was a technical problem and created a calm environment among the passengers”.
In October a Russian plane carrying 224 passengers was brought down by an IS bomb after leaving Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt.
“Because of the speed of the airplane going down, we thought we would crash in the sea”, said passenger Marine Gorlier of the French town of Melun after landing at Paris’ Charles de Gaulle Airport.
“The action we are taking is a universal action”.
“This is behavior that for me is criminal”.

“They are now airborne, but a few among them who we were interrogating have remained with us, until ongoing investigations are done”. “We find this behavior stupid, damaging and unacceptable”. “So now they say that they found a bomb, and so very exhausted, very hard”. Instead, people were told the plane had a technical problem and would be landing in Kenya instead of Paris. IS has also repeatedly threatened the symbols of France – among which Air France is prominent. Around 70 Paris airport workers have had their security passes withdrawn because they are suspected of links with radical Islamists. He said passengers reassured each other.
