Najib congratulates UK’s new PM, Theresa May

On Wednesday, May, having served as home secretary for the past six years, became the United Kingdom’s new prime minister, following David Cameron’s official resignation. “Clarity is in the interest of both Europe and the United Kingdom”, he said.

Once Mrs May arrives back at Downing Street she is expected to address the nation, after which she will begin the work of picking her first Cabinet.

The brief audience with Mr Cameron was followed within minutes by the arrival of Mrs May to be appointed by “kissing hands” with the monarch. May is stepping into the role after the resignation of David Cameron, leader of the Conservative Party, after his rash call for a referendum on Brexit (Britain’s leaving the European Union) had dire unintended consequences.

“On a snap election – at the moment she is saying no. But they [prime ministers] always do that when they come [to power]…”

“From the introduction of same sex marriage to taking people on low wages out of income tax altogether, David Cameron has led a One Nation government and it is in that spirit that I also plan to lead”.

It is anticipated Mrs May will choose a record number of women for senior Government positions.

Najib said he was looking forward to working with May to further strengthen trade and investment ties between United Kingdom and Malaysia. During this time, she was formally asked to form a government.
