Mr Mat Naim Ramli, the director of the Giant Panda Conservation Centre, said the authorities were unable to determine the sex of the new cub.

“Liang Liang began to show extraordinary behaviour, such as losing appetite, being less active and making peculiar sounds, two weeks ago”.

Rosly added that staff at GPCC in Kuala Lumpur saw Liang Liang showing labour symptoms when they took it out to the exhibition area at 10 am.

While pictures of the newborn are being shared all over social media, feng shui masters in Penang say the birth of the baby panda governed a new era and would provide a positive future for the country.

Malaysian Zoological Society Deputy President Rosly Ahmat Lana said the cub is now under complete care of its mother Liang Liang.

“We can see legs and some parts of the body but Liang Liang is still protecting it”, he was quoted as saying by The Star newspaper.

Malaysia is only one in three countries which managed to breed captive pandas naturally through mating as most panda cubs are conceived through artificial insemination.

Aside the two masters” majestic welcome, excited netizens have also suggested for the cub to be named “Merdeka’ in conjunction with the month it was born in.

On July 11, the giant panda pair, Xing Xing and Liang Liang, were reported to have failed in their attempt to mate for the second time after a year at the Giant Panda Conservation Centre. Liang Liang, together with a male giant panda Xing Xing, arrived in Malaysia last year on a 10- year loan for the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Malaysia.
