Years after leaving office, Ronald Reagan announced he was suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, leading to the establishment of the Nancy Reagan Research Institute to help support Alzheimer’s research. She saved these letters, published them as a book, and found them a comfort when he could no longer remember her.
As First Lady, she received numerous awards for her leadership role in the “Just Say No” Anti-drug campaign. She was also opposed to her husband running for the second presidential term in 1984, out of fear for his safety. She was an implacable force for her husband and whatever she thought served him best.
Carmen said Nancy Reagan was very involved – especially as the primary vote drew closer. “She was his protector”.
