Narendra Modi Meets Japanese PM Shinzo Abe

Japan’s interest in India is increasing due to variety of reasons including India’s huge and growing market and its resources, especially the human resources. “PM Narendra Modi meets Japan PM Shinzo Abe”, the Prime Minister’s Office tweeted as the nearly 45 minutes-long bilateral talks began.

According to Swarup, “The two leaders discussed further strengthening and diversification of trade and investment ties”.

Earlier, Japan’s Kyodo news agency reported that the two leaders are likely to discuss cooperation in the defence sector.

Japan’s economy barely grew in the second quarter, revised data showed Thursday, September 8, further calling into question Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s big-spending easy-money policy drive. “The India-Japan partnership could, therefore, produce global products and be a win-win partnership for both”.

They also reviewed the progress in the India-Japan Civil Nuclear Cooperation Agreement and the high-speed rail project. “Prime Minister Modi expressed appreciation for the consistent support rendered by Japan in India’s infrastructure development, technology upgradation and skill-building”, Swarup said.

Premier Abe recalled that 2017 will mark the 60th anniversary of the Japan-India cultural agreement.

During a visit to Japan in 2014, Modi urged Japanese businesses to consider using India as a base for manufacturing.

Regional and multilateral issues are likely to be discussed by the two leaders.

The weak growth figures will heap pressure on the Bank of Japan for more action when it meets later this month.

Modi also expressed condolences for the recent typhoon that hit Japan.
