We (NASA) are interested in the emerging world of smartwatch technology and are looking to leverage this technology to create a smartwatch app that could be helpful to astronauts.
The space astronaut watch is a general user interface for smart watch applications for use on the global Space Station, said NASA explaining the scope of the project on Freelancer.com and the reference device is Samsung Gear 2 and the app should function in a viariety of ways to stremline an astronaut’s life in space.
The participating freelancers will have to submit the wireframes in PNG or JPEG format that highlight app’s navigation, overall layout, look and feel and other relevant design elements.
The “Astronaut Smartwatch App” will first be used by the robotic crew member “Robonaut 2” now helping the astronauts on the orbiting laboratory, Freelancer.com said in a statement.

Currently, ISS astronauts use laptops and iPads but a smartwatch with apps should free them to conduct more tasks on the space station. The app needs to show the crew’s timeline of duties and events and indicate whether the ISS is able to communicate with ground stations. So, a smartwatch should be able to keep track of astronaut tasks in a less time consuming manner, NTL noted. Read the brief on the source link below. The prize money stands at $1500, which is definitely not to be overlooked, but the perks of designing an app for NASA probably will probably outweigh the cash in the eyes of many app designers. The contest has already received three entries at the time of writing this update.
