The space agency will gather a host of experts to its headquarters in Washington for a briefing where it promises to announce it has solved a huge mystery surrounding the Red Planet.
Details of the announcement haven’t been leaked, but fact the director of planetary science and lead scientist for the Mars Exploration Program will both be on hand at the news conference is an indication of the level of importance NASA has placed on it.
What could a grad student have to do with what would surely be one of the biggest scientific discoveries of the millennium?
Most of the scientists agree with Ojha argument stating that, there is water on the Mars.
It is believed the agency could announce that it has discovered microbial life on Earth’s near neighbour or alternatively that it has found evidence of flowing water.
As the images had been taken over time, they varied due to a range of distortions, such as shadows. When the season started changing back to winter, the lines disappeared.
He told CNN in 2011: “When I first saw them, I had no idea what it was”. It was a lucky accident. “I just thought it was a streak made by dust or something similar”.
You can see the discovery for yourself here.
Ojha was conducting an independent project with McEwen when he encountered the possibility of salt water on the planet and caused a stir by detailing the discovery in a paper published in the journal Science.
Also in attendance at Monday’s announcement is Mary Beth Wilhelm of Georgia IT and NASA’s Ames Research Center, and Alfred McEwen of the University of Arizona in Tucson.
