NASCAR’s harsh punishment on Matt Kenseth a rarity

What I’ve seen of Jeff Gordon in the Chase vs. Jeff Gordon in our regular season of 26 races is a completely different Jeff Gordon.

“It was a complete coward move”, Logano said. “Until anyone says anything to me personally, no (it’s not over)”.

“When someone does you wrong, they have an opportunity to defuse the situation by a phone call or talking to you at the race or even through the media, saying they made a mistake”. It is not okay to do what Kenseth did to Logano last Sunday, however.

The 19-year-old Calgary native is coming off a season-best third-place finish at Martinsville Speedway and is hoping the experience of two previous races at Texas will give him an edge in notching a first Camping World Truck Series win. You may remember they also had an on track disagreement at Charlotte in a chase race that led to the first annual Kenseth-Keselowski Battle Royale. The Penske driver is 28 points behind the final Championship Race transfer position, and will be desperate for another win. How hard would it be to say, “if you’re being blocked, you can expected you might get punted”.

“We factored the aspects of safety in our decision, and also teh fact tha tthe new Chase elimination format puts a premium on each and every race”, O’Donnell said.

It’s what the sport has become and, as long as NASCAR gets rousing reactions from fans, is there any reason to change it? “We don’t want any of our events to be altered in a way they shouldn’t be”.

“What we want to prevent happening is drivers or any participant in NASCAR to take matters into their own hands and begin to control the outcome of races beyond hard racing”. Those things happen, and they’ll happen again, perhaps in a less-obvious way, it seems. “And we’ll be dealing with that”.

Gordon exacted revenge most recently during the 2012 Chase for the Sprint Cup race at Phoenix global Raceway. “I think it’s more in that line right now”.

“I’ll be honest, me and Bowyer haven’t had any more problems since”.

“You make decisions every day”. You can not cut him any slack on pit road. That being said as far as NASCAR is concern it couldn’t have gone any better.

Yet in the same breath France said that close contact racing – a staple in stock vehicle racing and one that often initiated the action taken by Kenseth – must remain.

Matt Kenseth isn’t going racing for two weeks. The right front was dragging down there and probably should’ve went to the garage area and went into the corner there and man couldn’t get it to turn and collected him.

“You’ve got to be consistent”, Chaser Kyle Busch said after Martinsville. It’s a tough sport. Logano was trying to pass Kenseth to win a race at Kansas.

Both JGR and NASCAR officials said they would have no additional comment.

Fans cheered Kenseth when he emerged from his No. 20 Toyota in Turn 1.

Tony Stewart (14) crashes with Denny Hamlin (11), Austin Dillon (3), Jimmie Johnson (48) and others on a restart attempt in the final laps of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series auto race at Talladega Superspeedway, Sunday, October 25, 2015, in Talladega, Ala.

FOX Sports analyst Jeff Hammond suggested that JGR could have definite grounds to get the penalty overturned or reduced.

“It’s going to be really easy”.

Instead, Logano finished 37th and will likely need to win one of the next two races at Texas or Phoenix in order to advance to the championship round.

“There are several incidents”. I’ll be honest, I felt like I was back up on that box watching Darrell Waltrip go for a win. So, they have a lot to argue that NASCAR either did nothing or assessed points and fines. Joe Gibbs Racing will argue it’s very inconsistent.
