Decommissioning is a non-punitive, administrative action in which an officer’s policing authority is temporarily suspended, pending an investigation.

Two Nashville police officers have been decomissioned within a week of each other for posts on their personal Facebook accounts. Alton Sterling, 37, died after being pinned to the ground and shot on Tuesday in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

“I am extremely concerned and disturbed by the videos and the accounts we have heard thus far coming from Baton Rouge and Falcon Heights”, Anderson wrote. “We will conduct a thorough investigation, and the individuals responsible will be held accountable”.

Venable replied “Yeah. I would have done 5”, presumably saying he would have shot Castile five times. “He may have disqualified himself to be a police officer”.

“Our training emphasizes the sanctity of human life”, Anderson says.

Taylor, an 11-year veteran with the department, said the image is related to his interest in history. “What he said does not in any way represent the men and women of this police department”.

Anderson says the department is working to maintain the confidence of the public.

A Metro police officer was decommissioned Sunday for posting an iconic Black Panthers photo on Facebook, according to police. However, tensions between the police force and some Nashville communities do exist.

A vigil and protest is planned for Friday night in Nashville, and Anderson said that the vigil should go on as scheduled, despite the massacre of police in Dallas Thursday night.
