When she came out of the life-saving surgery, she learned that her sister Cookie, who had been battling lung cancer, had died. The album, which included a duet between Cole and her father on the title song, “Unforgettable”, won Cole three Grammys, including Album of the Year.
Below is a video of Cole’s live performance of her 1979 hit song, Sophisticated Lady.
It was a devastating blow and it affected her for the rest of her life.
With Love, ” which paid tribute to her father.
I am so sad to hear about Natalie Cole’s passing. “Though near or far”. The album won the Grammy for Album of the Year. As well as trying to emerge out of her father’s shadow, a feud broke out with fellow R&B diva Aretha Franklin – the latter was particularly irked at suggestions by the press that Cole was “the new Aretha”. Then I cried a whole lot.
Cole started singing at music clubs while in college at the University of MA. There were reports that she’d been hospitalized last month, but somehow we’d thought she’d find a way to pull through again. Her father too was a widely popular crooner. The album became a multiplatinum smash and Cole received multiple Grammy Awards, including album of the year. Although she occasionally still had hits (Someone That I Used to Love (1980 / #21 Pop / #21 R&B / #3 AC), I Love For Your Love (1987 / #13 Pop / #4 R&B / #2 AC), Pink Cadillac (1988 / #5 Pop / #9 R&B / #16 AC), Miss You Like Crazy (1989 / #7 Pop / #1 R&B / #1 AC)), it was in 1991 that she had the biggest album of her career. “I’m a fighter, not a chump”, she said. She was always so kind & exuded so much grace.
She faced racism while growing up in Los Angeles’ overwhelmingly white, upmarket Hancock Park area. Her mother, Maria Cole, was a singer who had performed with the Duke Ellington Orchestra. He introduced his children to performers including Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra, known to the kids as Auntie Ella and Uncle Frank.
“I am sorry to hear about Natalie Cole’s passing”.
Cole eventually became active in raising awareness of Hepatitis C. And, she said in the interview, she still wished her father could see her.
The “Unforgettable” duet kicked off a veritable sub-genre of albums pairing such elder statesmen of classic pop as Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett with a wide range of contemporary vocalists from rock, soul and even country music. She was blessed with superior vocal range, solid phrasing and a workhorse ability to dramatically build a song into a powerful climax. Her personal troubles with drug addiction and family tragedies made her an inspirational figure for millions of her fans around the world, according to USA Today. “I was madly in love with Elvis Presley”, she would later reflect in her memoir. “She gave me an icy stare and turned her back on me”.
She could carry a song, of course, as evidenced by her famously convincing argument on the power of “Everlasting Love”.

Ms. Cole appeared on television, including on holiday specials such as the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade, Christmas programs and Dick Clark’s New Year’s Eve celebration, and on shows including “Touched by an Angel”, “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit”. Her music will live on forever. The couple were married in 1976 and had one son, Robert.
