National Adoption Awareness Month looks to help children of all ages

Children become eligible for adoption by order of the court, when it has been determined it is not in their best interest to remain in the custody of their parents or caregivers.

Six children were officially adopted into three families at the Mesa County Justice Center on Friday. Last year, more than 5,000 children were adopted in Texas, that’s more than any other year before. She says that for much of her childhood she and a sister jumped from home to home, what she refers to as the “foster drift”. “In life, we all have a objective”.

“Finally, we feel like we have permanency”, Cheryl Maichl said.

Monday through Friday, life in the Edmonson household hums with activity.

There are approximately 6,800 children in foster care legally free to be adopted. Between bottle feedings, naps, meals, doctor’s appointments, school and therapy, Ganessa and Drew have a full day. “Our strength comes from seeing happy situations for these children”. “And in 2014 Camden County actually had the highest amount of adoptions for the year in the state of New Jersey”, said Michelle Gentek-Mayer, Camden County Surrogate-Elect.

“I’ve never met a little girl more appreciative of just the essential things”, said Twyla Steenblock.

It isn’t an easy journey, she said. “This is a celebration of children being able to be with their forever families”.

After years of being shuffled from family to family in foster care, the pair landed in the permanent home of Robin Fogel of Coopersburg, Lehigh County. Within Pennsylvania alone, 2,000 kids need a forever-family.

CT celebrates National Adoption Day by partnering with juvenile courts across CT to conduct about 50 adoption proceedings where the news media is invited to report.

First Justice Joan M. McMenemy, who formally signed adoption certificates, along with Judges Judith A. Locke and Richard A. Simons, said, “Research shows there are a number of families out there who could adopt, but the key is in trying to connect those families with those children”.
