National Blood Donor Month in Hampton Roads
The American Red Cross will help with 21 area blood drives in January for National Blood Donor Month. Winter can often be a hard time for blood donations because of cold and flu season, inclement weather and various activities surrounding the holiday season. Organizers are hoping to have several gift certificates for the donors’ raffle. Platelets can be donated every seven days up to 24 times a year. “Being a blood donor is kind of an fantastic thing because to a lot of people it’s something that they do for many reasons – people start donating because it impacted them personally or they may have needed blood at one point or had a family member that needed blood”. “That makes me feel like a hero”.
