National Express becomes Living Wage employer – and 340 get a pay rise!

Over 50,000 people in Cumbria are paid less than the Living Wage according to the latest research. “We are proud to be a Champion and supporter of the Living Wage movement across Canada”. But the Parkhead club said it would not sign up to the Living Wage as it would mean “handing over decision making on salaries to another agency”.

The council contractually requires all three of its major homecare providers – Allied Healthcare, London Care, and Sevacare – to pay Islington-based staff at least the living wage of £9.15 an hour, soon to be raised to £9.40.

This living wage is the amount, calculated annually by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, needed to provide an adequate standard of living.

In Telford & Wrekin, 21,000 people are earning less than £7.85 an hour – 25 per cent of the workforce – while in the rest of Shropshire 29,000 people are below the line, or 29 per cent of workers. The number paid below the living wage is projected to reach 24% (6.5million individuals) in 2016, and 30% by 2020, if the living wage continues to rise as it has done previously. The Living Wage Foundation recognises and celebrates the leadership shown by Living Wage employers across the UK.

“In short, paying the Living Wage isn’t just the right thing to do, it is the smart thing to do”.

A spokesperson at Eastbourne Borough Council said, “Despite ongoing cuts from Government in council funding, we are now setting aside money in the budget to support the National Living Wage being introduced next April”. Paying a Living Wage will save huge swathes of people being caught between the desire to contribute to society and the inability to afford to do so.

At the club’s annual meeting previous year Celtic announced they are prepared to offer permanent staff the Living Wage and would consult with staff.

Sundial Group has been chosen as the victor of the Living Wage Employer Champion Award 2015 for the East Midlands region.

House of Friendship is one of the employers who will be recognized as a Living Wage Leader on November 5th. Most of these employees work in Celtic’s retail arm.

However, a Celtic spokesman described it as “totally inaccurate” to say the club had “misled anyone in any way” and added that following the consultation; “Our lowest permanent employees are now paid £7.85 per hour, equivalent to the Living Wage”. But politicianshave a role in this too – to hold the government to account on the effectiveness of its approach to tackling low pay. “If we fail to help young people today we risk scarring their incomes for the rest of their careers”.
