National Football League monitoring Hurricane Joaquin for Redskins game

National Football League officials are discussing contingency plans with the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Redskins in the event Hurricane Joaquin impacts the game scheduled for Sunday afternoon at FedExField.

“We are monitoring the forecast and having dialogue with both teams”, Greg Aiello, NFL’s senior vice president of communications, said.

Both the Redskins and Eagles have a bye in Week 8 and if the game were to be postponed, that’s likely when it would be made up.

The Buffalo Bills and New York Jets played at Ford Field in November 2014 after heavy snowfall in Buffalo, New York, forced the teams to change locations. The entire Saints’ 2005 home schedule was moved after the damage Hurricane Katrina inflicted on the Superdome and a pair of Dolphins games have been postponed or delayed to due to hurricane-like conditions.

Per Sosnowski, the Washington, D.C., and Baltimore areas could see “significant rain, wind and coastal flooding” if Joaquin hits that part of the country. The Conference is also considering moving or postponing the game depending on the severity of the weather.

The two NFC East rivals are supposed to kick off in Landover, Maryland at 1:00 p.m. Sunday.
