National Football League notebook: Broncos give Miller biggest deal for non-QB
Miller was drafted with the 2nd overall pick in 2011 out of Texas A&M by Denver.

Last month, Cox was signed to a six-year, $102 million deal with $63 million guaranteed, which at the time made him the highest paid defensive player in National Football League history.
“I think it will happen because me and Elway went down to the wire past year”, said receiver Demaryius Thomas, who signed a $70 million deadline deal (including $43.5 million guaranteed) in 2015 with only about 30 minutes to spare.
Miller’s deal is reportedly a six-year deal worth $114.5 million with $70 million guaranteed.
He’ll be the first quarterback to play a season on the tag since San Diego’s Drew Brees in 2005.
The Broncos and Miller’s agent, Joby Branion, had largely agreed to the contract’s six-year length and the total amount before the summer.
As the deadline for a long-term deal fast approaches, the Denver Broncos are no longer playing games with Super Bowl 50 MVP Von Miller. Last season he had 35 tackles, 11 sacks and forced four fumbles, before adding another 11 tackles, 5 sacks, and 2 forced fumbles in the playoffs.
Miller, who won the Super Bowl MVP this year, hasn’t had progress in talks with Denver.
If Miller doesn’t take this offer, he’ll have to play next season under the franchise tag, which would be a one-year tender for a bit more than $14 million for the upcoming season. A day later, Miller, who skipped the offseason program, will join his teammates on the field for the first time since the Super Bowl.
In his sophomore season, Miller set the Broncos’ franchise record 18.5 sacks in a single season. The franchise tag isn’t going anywhere - NFL team owners love it, as it helps them keep salaries down, and the NFL Players’ Association agreed to continue it in a collective bargaining agreement that won’t end until 2021, when Miller is 32.
But the Broncos’ front office had offered him the franchise tag, which at the time was only worth $12.8 million, but both sides obviously wanted to get something long-term completed.
“Von’s earned this contract not only for what he’s done in the past but for what we believe he’ll do in the future”, Elway said in a statement.
He’s bounced back in a big way, though, and the Broncos are willing to pay him like the future Hall of Famer he is.
Throughout the negotiations, Elway said Miller “knows how the Broncos feel about him, he knows how I feel about him”.

Cousins will earn $19.95 million this season while playing under the franchise tag for Washington after the sides failed to agree on a long-term contract. The Denver Broncos celebrated their Super Bowl victory with a a parade and celebration on February 9, 2016 at the City & County Building. His 2013 campaign was rough one as he was suspended six games for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy, along with tearning his right ACL near the seasons end.
