National Football League notebook | Steelers mum on Shazier’s knee injury

Aside from getting defeated by the Philadelphia Eagles over the weekend, the Cleveland Browns also suffered another major loss in the form of Robert Griffin III’s injury. “He may come back and play a few games, but the Browns would have to be even more out of their mind than normal to decide that he is the answer in 2017”.

BALANCED ATTACK: The Eagles mixed the run and pass well against the Browns and dominated time of possession, a rarity under Chip Kelly. Cleveland passed on Wentz in the 2016 draft, trading their pick to the Eagles who selected him #2 overall.

On Monday, there is only one game on the schedule, as the Philadelphia Eagles take to the road to face the Chicago Bears.

“Hang in there, buddy”.

Not for nothing, the Browns hit rookie Carson Wentz 8 times. Wentz did not let the first game jitters get to him.

The RGIII era in Cleveland might be over before it ever really got started.

The Browns might actually have a chance at winning some games this season now. They average three quarterbacks a year. The Eagles showed they valued Daniel with the contract they gave him when he thought he was going to be Sam Bradford’s backup, and he’s apparently giving them their money’s worth. Now, as it should be, the focus can be on the development of the players not the results on the scoreboard.

Previous year was the ideal example of what McCown brings to the Browns. But even in his prime he rarely saw the field as a starter, and is little more than a stopgap measure for the Browns at this point. Tom Brady and Pittsbugh’s Antonio Brown. Some of that was the limited receiving options around Barnidge past year but McCown’s return could help the Browns use their talented tight end. “If the doctors say I’m good, the trainers say I’m good, and my body feels good, then that is the goal”.

Coach Hue Jackson said Kessler needs practice reps to get ready if he’s needed, and he should see an increase as the No. 2. Losing Griffin after week one is nearly comically appropriate for this franchise, and the added sting of getting burned by Wentz just adds another layer to the Browns’ misery. Sunday’s game left a lot of Browns fans with a feeling of “here we go again”. The team is full of rookies – seventeen total on the opening day roster – and we should see some development as the young players pick up National Football League reps. “Josh McCown is as good a person as I’ve ever met anywhere”. Yet, despite the early success and the Browns’ latest quarterback mess to work through, they’re not pressing the panic button yet.

One of the big reasons the Eagles won their opener was they committed to the ground game. He’s not quick with a quip like his predecessor, Chip Kelly, nor is he the butcher of syntax like Manuel, but it hard not to like what we’ve seen from Pederson.

The decision to sign Griffin is turning out to be as Browns-esque as it gets.
