National Football League roundup: Rams top Cowboys before 89140

Prescott state line: Prescott went 10 of 12, with one of his incompletions a bad drop, for 139 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Goff’s left, non-throwing shoulder “was a little sore” from a hit he took on the first series he was in, Fisher said.

When the regular season rolls around in September, though, the Rams will take over the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on Sundays and Mondays only.

Those moves have widely been expected, with Fisher and Snead headed to the final years of their contracts, but given how much of Saturday’s game went, and the fact that the Rams haven’t had a winning season in the four-year Fisher-Snead era, the optics could have been much better. The Los Angeles Rams appeased the home crowd with a 28-24 win over the Dallas Cowboys.

Rams running back Todd Gurley and defensive end Robert Quinn also did not play, as a crowd of 89,140 saw Cowboys wide receiver Lucky Whitehead score on a 101-yard kick return to welcome the National Football League back to Southern California after a 22-year absence.

“I got eight!” he said, and he plans to hold on to them for decades to come.

Nelson Spruce had a big night on national television in the Rams first action since returning to Los Angeles. “That’s what we did”, said Boykin.

For now fans have to watch a rebuilding Rams team, though with reasons for excitement including explosive young running back Todd Gurley and No. 1 overall draft pick quarterback Jared Goff, who for now will back up starter Case Keenum. Meanwhile, third-string quarterback Sean Mannion threw three touchdown passes in the second half to help Los Angeles erase a 17-point deficit. He threw an interception and suffered the injury when hit by Dallas linebacker Derek Akunne in his first series. He also threw an interception.

“You know, that’s something you can try to emphasize to the quarterback between plays, manage the situation, know where you are on the field, but you certainly got the sense that he knew that already”, Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett said.

Spruce, a rookie free agent from Colorado who played at Westlake High School, caught eight passes for 51 yards, both game highs.

The Cowboys lost 28-24, but Prescott was the story for Dallas. The Rams host the Chiefs next Saturday.

“They stayed until the fourth quarter of a preseason game and were on their feet for the whole fourth quarter, so you can tell right there what it means to them”. And his throw over the middle to Pharoh Cooper would have put the Rams inside the 10-yard line.

“I just feel like we’ve got to come out faster, knock out some of the mental errors”, said running back Benny Cunningham, whose 14-yard run in the first quarter was the Rams’ lone touchdown in the first half.

Goff is still behind Keenum on the depth chart, but it’s not out of the question that he’ll surpass him with a few solid performances in the preseason.
