National Herald case: Congress activists set fire to BJP’s effigy
It is doubtful if Dr Swamy would have been attracted to the idea of this high-stakes legal challenge, impleading himself in the matter of the debt-laden Associated Journals Ltd, which published the newspaper National Herald that was founded by Jawaharlal Nehru, being taken over by Young India, a newly-started not-for-profit Section 25 company in which Sonia and Rahul own 76 per cent of the shares, had the principal holders been other Congress figures, not the Gandhis.

Nonetheless, BJP’s high-level conspiracy to sully the images of the two Congress leaders and suppress Congress party must be opposed. Despite sending a last-minute missive to party leaders to keep the affair low key, lest they invite wrath of judiciary, the party put up a resurgent and united face standing behind its leaders.
But going to jail in what is essentially a property case, and by no stretch of imagination and political case, would have further exposed the marginalization of the Gandhis in the polity with no Opposition party willing to stand by them in the Herald case.
However, with the Gandhis getting bail in the case, coupled with Rajya Sabha chairman Hamid Ansari calling an all-party meeting on Friday, the Congress party is expected to be less confrontational in the remaining three days of the winter session and to allow the passage of a few bills.
For the present, however, the Congress is drawing comfort from the BJP also being on the defensive.
Union Environment Minister and senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Prakash Javadekar on Saturday said the local court has granted bail, not medal, to Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice president Rahul Gandhi, and he failed to understand why the Congress was in a celebratory mood. I want to tell all the citizens of India that the Congress party and I will not bend. “And it is using government agencies to do that”.
The law of the land, said Sonia Gandhi on Saturday, applies equally to everyone. They were granted bail.
Swamy first filed the case against the Congress bosses in 2001.
Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who had also gone to the court as a solidarity with Gandhis, talked of the party’s determined fight for its values, its ideas and ideals and asserted that “nobody can detract the Congress Party from that path”. “The bungalow was given as an award for dragging the Congress leadership to court”.
Party insiders said the top brass was also anxious about a presser planned by Kirti Azad, MP, to highlight corruption in a cricket body that was once headed by the Finance Minister, Arun Jaitley.

Despite denial of any show of strength in support of the Congress leadership, a huge crowd descended at the Akbar Road, many of them coming from Gandhis’ Amethi and Rai Bareli constituencies.
