The National Hurricane Center says Tropical Storm Newton has formed off Mexico’s Pacific coast and is headed toward Baja California.

A tropical storm warning is in effect from Manzanillo to Cabo Corrientes, north of Puerto Cortes to Punta Abreojos, north of San Evaristo to Mulege, and from Bahia Tempehuaya to Bahia Kino. A warning is typically issued 36 hours before the anticipated first occurrence of tropical-storm- force winds, conditions that make outside preparations hard or unsafe.

“Hurricane conditions, including excessive rainfall and violent winds, may cause flash flooding and landslides, which may lead to transportation and communications problems”, the Canadian government’s warning states.

Newton’s maximum sustained winds increased to 65 miles per hour (105 kph), and the U.S. National Hurricane Center said it was expected to become a hurricane and make landfall in Baja California Sur sometime Tuesday.

Forecasters expect Newton to continue moving in the same general direction with an increase in forward speed into Tuesday.

Hurricane Newton is heading north-west across the Pacific and it expected to reach the southern end of the Baja California peninsula this morning. Winds are expected to first reach tropical storm strength by late Monday night, making outside preparations hard or risky. Newton could also produce 5 to 10 inches (12.5 to 25 cm) of rain in the states of Colima, Michoacan, Jalisco, Nayarit and Sinaloa, the NHC said.
