National Park Service creates ‘living emblem’ in DC

As a part of the National Parks Service 100th birthday, Williamson County celebrated its own piece of the park system, the Natchez Trace Parkway. The Heritage Areas are designations under the Park Service but don’t feature the boundaries and infrastructure of other park service units.

“Each station will have something different”, said Joette Langianese, executive director of the nonprofit group Friends of Arches and Canyonlands Parks. “We would love for the community to come out”. The free activities begin at 7 p.m., with snow cones, popcorn and trivia events. The Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park in Maryland is offering free mule-drawn boat rides on Thursday.

All of them are free through Sunday, August 28th, in celebration of the Centennial, so get out and “park it” somewhere.

To celebrate the milestone anniversary, here’s a look back at Independence Hall through the years.

Californians can enjoy the natural wonders of national parks such as Yosemite, Death Valley and Sequoia & Kings Canyon on the government dime this weekend as the parks system celebrates its centennial.

For those of you homebound, Google has created a pretty unbelievable virtual tour of five national parks: Kenai Fjords National Park, Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park, Carlsbad Caverns National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, and Dry Tortugas National Park (check out the below embedded video).

America’s 28th President, Woodrow Wilson, formed the National Park Service on August 25, 1916 to “protect the wild and wonderful landscapes” in the United States. “So the National Park Service in its next century must welcome all visitors, all Americans and foreign visitors as well to these incredible public lands”.
