National Toy Hall of Fame announces Class of 2016 finalists

The list contained expected characters, such as Care Bears and Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots, and less traditional toys like your everyday swing and even bubble wrap.

After evaluating each on criteria including innovation, longevity, educational qualities and iconic status, judges at The Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, New York, will announce just two or three toys on November 10 that have been chosen for a place in the hall.

All toys inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame, are now on display at The Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, New York.

Every year, the National Toy Hall of Fame adds new toys to its list.

Coloring Book – Coloring books have been entertaining kids for decades and ones aimed at adults are becoming more popular.

Two or three of the twelve finalists will be selected for induction into the hall of fame. In addition, they must have longevity.

Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots boxing games are placed on the tables inside BB Kings night club, before a night of Corporate Challenge Boxing in New York July 20, 2010. Although a majority of the finalists are books, games, and toys, this year’s list of potential inductees also includes bubble wrap.

The museum recognizes toys that have delighted multiple generations, inspiring them to learn, create and discover through play. Bubble wrap rounds out the list.

Care Bears – The toys were introduced in the in the early 1980s and went on to star in their own animated television show.

Nerf. The foam balls were first produced in the 1960s.

Uno – 1971 was the year that this card game came out and it has entertained players ever since.

Fisher-Price first debuted the wooded “Little People” toys in their 1959 toy, Safety School Bus. It was not originally designed or meant to be a toy, but instead, a type of wallpaper.
