Over his last three starts, Montero has allowed 14 walks in 11 innings. Mets general manager Sandy Alderson told reporters that Backman “has chose to move on”, after working in New York’s minor league system since 2010.

Manager Terry Collins was not sure who would start the next time Montero’s turn comes up, but he ruled out giving the right-hander another opportunity. Anthony Rendon clubbed a three-run home while ex-Met Daniel Murphy kept tormenting his former club by going 3-for-5, giving him at least one hit in all 17 games versus NY this season.

Mat Latos was removed from his first start with the Washington Nationals on Monday when he appeared to injure his right leg with one out in the fifth inning.

After Latos left the contest with an injury, Trevor Gott (W, 1-0) picked up his first career win in relief for the Nationals. Reynanldo Lopez (3-3) combined with three relievers for 4 2/3 scoreless innings. The move backfired as Rendon then delivered his 18th homer of the season to put the Nationals ahead 6-1.

Jose Reyes hit a leadoff double in the first and later scored on a Yoenis Cespedes RBI sac fly to give NY a short-lived 1-0 lead.

Wilson Ramos and Ryan Zimmerman hit back-to-back, two-out RBI singles off Gabriel Ynoa to bring Jayson Werth and Bryce Harper in and make it 8-1 over the Mets in the fourth. Even though Rafael Montero had his issues with command over two spot starts, the Mets gave him the ball again tonight against the Washington Nationals.

Former Mets infielder Wally Backman will not return as the organization’s Triple-A manager in 2017. The Nationals’ Anthony Rendon went 1-for-3 with his 37th double – most among NL third baseman – in Sunday’s 3-2 victory over Philadelphia and is hitting.321 with six home runs, 35 RBIs, 26 runs scored and 20 doubles in his last 44 games.2. Murphy is 28-for-68 against this NY, tying the longest hit streak against the Mets in one season.2. Manager Terry Collins said that Flores tried to hit Monday afternoon but his neck remained sore. The Nationals, who lead the Mets by nine games in the NL East, won six of their last seven games as they face the possibility of ace Stephen Strasburg missing the rest of the season because of a strained flexor mass in his right arm. Montero faced Washington once, yielding a hit, a walk and striking out two in two scoreless innings of relief in April 2015.Latos earned the victory by striking out the only batter he faced in a 5-4 win over Atlanta on September 7.
