Nationals’ Stephen Strasburg leaves start in third inning

Nationals: The team reinstated INF Stephen Drew, who missed 40 games due to vertigo-like symptoms. The red flags went up when he lost control of a fastball and sent it high and away, the next pitch would be his last for the night.

Peter Bourjos led off the third with a blast off the left field foul pole and, with two outs, Ryan Howard lifted a fly ball that carried over the fence in center.

With Stephen Strasburg out, Dusty Baker and the Nationals have some serious rotation questions going forward. Ramirez, who turns 35 on September 22, hit.240 with five homers and 41 RBIs in 128 games with San Diego, starting 109 games at shortstop, three in right field and one at designated hitter. He struck out eight batters without a walk. “We got that out of there”, Lessard said.

Washington Nationals right-hander Stephen Strasburg left Wednesday night’s start against the Atlanta Braves in the top of the third inning with an apparent injury.

“(Ross) is important, but we can’t rush him because we’d have two of them down”, Baker said. “Hopefully (Reynaldo) Lopez and A.J. can be good for the team”. Cobb was out of the majors past year and came back last week, giving up two runs in five innings against Toronto in a no-decision. Strasburg had spent the previous three weeks on the disabled list with a sore elbow, a condition he said affected him in between (but not during) starts. “But a lot of times you really don’t know until you get into action”. The then-Yankees closer didn’t stay on the disabled list too long though, as his next appearance was just under one month later. Carlos Carrasco overcame a home run and an apparent bug in his eye to pitch into the eighth inning.

From the Nationals’ perspective, this news was about as encouraging as could reasonably have been expected, considering everyone acknowledged something happened during Wednesday’s game.

Jeanmar Gomez pitched the ninth for his 36th save.

Back in May, the Nationals agreed to a contract extension with Strasburg to the surprise of many.

Murphy posted the sixth 100-RBI season in Nationals’ history (2005-present) and the first since Adam LaRoche had 100 in 2012.

Lessard says the new injury is unrelated to the one that landed Strasburg on the DL.

“It’s not a season-ending injury, but we still need to take time to make sure he’s nice and strong because of his past”. Nationals Manager spoke on their starter’s performance.
