#NationalShutDown worldwide Twitter trend

Today while universities in South Africa united for the “national shutdown”, aimed at halting university fee increments for the forth-coming year, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) also started chanting in Parliament “fees must fall”. Mbali said the students merely “went to parliament to voice their frustration with not being listened to on the call for fees to fall”.

House chairwoman Thoko Didiza ordered the MPs out but they refused, resulting in their being forcibly removed.

As tensions rose between police and protesting students, stun grenades were used to disperse the crowd.

The cause of the riots emanate from an increase in tuition fee rates effected by that country’s Minister of Higher Education Blade Nzimande. Their overarching message he said is that “there should be nothing about them without them”.

One person is understood to have been injured during the police standoff with students, while seven others were arrested. The committee reported back more than two years ago.

Students have been protesting since Monday after a tertiary student fee increase of 6% was announced over the weekend.
