NATO says Turkey’s membership not in question after failed coup

The reclusive cleric is accused by Ankara of ordering the coup in which a rogue military faction tried to oust President Recep Tayyip Erdogan from power without success.
Gulen, who lives in self-imposed exile in Pennsylvania, has denied involvement in the violent coup attempt that left more than 270 people dead.
“Let me say openly, this is because the European Union adopted a favourable position to the coup. encouraged the putschists”, Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu told Turkish media.
Some analysts are concerned that the relationship could have a negative effect on North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.

The religious affairs directorate, Diyanet, said in a statement that 2,560 people have been suspended in the latest wave, bringing the total dismissed to 3,672 since July 15.
“We are not amending our relations with Russian Federation to send a message to the West”, he told Anadolu.

Cavusoglu said Turkey’s rapprochement with Russian Federation was not meant as a message to the West. However, he said if the West “loses” Turkey it will be because of its own mistakes, not Ankara’s good ties with Russia, China or the Islamic world.
