Naturalized Afghan citizen in custody in connection with NY, NJ explosions

Authorities believe the explosion in New York City’s Chelsea neighborhood over the weekend in which 29 people were injured was terrorism.

As the investigation continued into the blast that injured 29 people in New York City’s Chelsea neighborhood on Saturday night, the FBI questioned five people early Monday following a auto stop in Brooklyn. He says the man was initially presumed to be a vagrant, but police officers who responded quickly realized it was Ahmad Khan Rahami.

Earlier Saturday, a pipe bomb detonated at a military charity run in Seaside Park, New Jersey. The race was canceled.

Meanwhile, streets in Manhattan remained closed last night following the blast.

Five other people were also arrested Sunday night in possible connection with the Chelsea explosion during a routine traffic stop check that uncovered a cache of guns inside the vehicle. The discovery of Tannerite may be important as authorities probe whether the two New York City devices and the pipe bomb at the Jersey shore are connected.

Police conducted a series of raids in Elizabeth on Monday, and also found five bombs near a train station in the town after receiving a tip late Sunday about a suspicious package. The men, who said they believed it may have contained valuables, notified police when they saw wires and a pipe inside the bag. The FBI and New Jersey State Police reportedly used a drone and determined that the device could be a bomb. The suspect was wounded, as were two officers, but not seriously.

Bollwage said that he wasn’t willing to say that Elizabeth had become a target, and that it was possible that someone anxious about the authorities was trying to get rid of the package. A policeman sent to investigate recognized the suspect, and a gun fight ensued.

Rahami was born on January 23, 1988, in Afghanistan. He has brown hair, brown eyes and brown facial hair. New York’s emergency management department said New Jersey-bound Amtrak trains are being held at New York Penn Station. The police and fire departments both report that none of the injuries appear life-threatening.

A law enforcement official says the blast that rocked a bustling Chelsea neighborhood appeared to have come from a construction toolbox in front of a building.

Tannerite, an explosive often used for target practice, can be purchased in many sporting goods stores or online. Police have not confirmed if the apartment being searched in that city is Rahami’s.
