University officials said Steven Jones was arrested immediately after the shooting and faces one count of first-degree murder and three of aggravated assault.
Colin Brough, an NAU freshman from Colorado, was killed. “There is one victim, three are being treated at our local medical center and the shooter is in custody”, NAU spokeswoman Cindy Brown told CNN. “Please keep the Brough family in your thoughts and prayers”. NAU police say he did not try to run. And he called Brough’s death “just a waste”.
Nicholas Prato was wounded in the pre-dawn shooting, according to university officials.
The shooting came on the day Barack Obama was visiting Roseburg, Oregon, where eight students and a teacher were shot and killed last week at Umpqua Community College.
A Castle View High School graduate was killed on the campus of Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff early this morning.
On Friday, the 18-year-old reportedly open fired on a group of students at Flagstaff campus following a confrontation in the student parking lot.
The incident began as a fight between two groups of students in front of a dorm, police said. “One of our students is deceased”.
Later that morning a shooting at a student complex near Texas Southern University left one person dead. “We don’t know the facts yet about what brought [the students] together or what caused the confrontation”, the chief added. He said not all of them live on campus. The second victim was shot after taking a step in Jones’ direction, according to the witness.
Mr Fowler said the attacker used a handgun in the shootings.
The shooting was first reported at the school’s Flagstaff, Arizona, campus around 4:20 a.m. EDT.
As he spoke, several students were seen huddled in the back of the room – a few covered with blankets and sobbing as they hugged friends and classmates.
“This is not something that happens here”, NAU student Anna Valdez told USA TODAY. Nick looked at the shooter and then he shot him. “It’s just really sad that he didn’t get to spread more happiness on this planet”.

Brough went to Broadneck High School in Annapolis, Md., for his freshman and sophomore years, said spokesman for Anne Arundel County public schools Bob Mosier.
