Nawaz Sharif inaugurates Pak-China Friendship Tunnels

Nawaz said Gilgit-Baltistan is a vital link in the China Pakistan Economic Corridor and would benefit most from this mega project which would particularly increase the tourist influx.

Member of National Highway Authority Abdullah Jan briefed the Prime Minister about the features and importance of the multi-million dollar project completed in three years.

Later, the Prime Minister performed inauguration of realigned 24 km patch of KKH containing five tunnels at Attabad Barrier Lake.

He assured that security force will be deployed on the Karakorum highway from Gilgit to Mansehra for the safety of commuters and traders.

It has been rebuilt to restore parts of the road that were submerged due to landsliding in January 2010.

Five tunnels accumulative length of 7.12 kilometers, 16 kilometers road and two new bridges of 1 kilometer long were constructed.

The landslide dam had also hit hard the trade between Pakistan and China and with the completion of this project, the trade activity will be restored, he added. NHA officials briefed Mr Sharif on the details of the project and status of up-gradation of other parts of KKH.

The Prime Minister was received by the Chief Minister Gilgit Baltistan at Gilgit Airport.
