Sharif “was in high spirits” when he went in to the operating theater at about 8:00 a.m. (0700 GMT), his daughter, Maryam, said on her Twitter account.
Shahbaz Sharif, the chief minister of Pakistan’s Punjab province, told reporters Tuesday in London that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, his older brother, has been moved to an intensive care unit after four bypass operations.
“The Prime Minister is kept abreast on routine matters of the country and his directions are accordingly conveyed to the concerned quarters”, the statement said.
On Monday, the prime minister’s spokesperson Musaddik Malik told reporters that Sharif would stay at the hospital for a few days after surgery and later he would be shifted home, he said.
The prime minister is expected to be in the hospital for a week following his surgery.
She disclosed that her father wanted to undergo surgery after two years but doctors suggested him to do it now.
Sharif received numerous wishes for success from world leaders and Pakistani officials prior to the operation.
Sharif was wished before his surgery by his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Afghan President Ashraf Ghani. “Prayers doing miracles… Grafting of vessels started an hour ago”, she said on Twitter.
