In a reflection of how viewing habits are changing, NBC said that by the end of Tuesday, people had already streamed more minutes of live Olympics coverage through the network’s website and app than for the entirety of the London Games. “We’ve also been pleasantly surprised that our multi-platform strategy is paying big dividends”.
The network led with an average of 15.3 million viewers, followed by ABC with 4.1 million.
It’s a whole new experience for viewers by following the athletes, teams and nations they care about most, and navigate the entire Olympics experience with the sound of their voice using the X1 voice remote.
In the prime time hours between 7 and 11 p.m., Fast Affiliate returns from Nielsen give NBC an average 29.7 million viewers.
Complicating comparisons to prior Olympics – and keeping ratings analysts busy – is the ever-growing coverage on NBC’s cable television outlets as well as live streaming of all events. However, Olympic fare was also shown on NBCSN and Bravo in prime-time this year.
If you don’t normally watch sports, why do you watch the Olympics? For the full Olympics, there have been a total of 647 million live streaming minutes, up 266% from the same time period in London – and the equivalent of three times the live streaming minutes of NBC’s last Super Bowl (215.7 million).
MR. TRAUTWIG REGRETS: NBC gymnastics announcer Al Trautwig said Monday he regretted saying on Twitter that the adoptive parents of USA gymnast Simone Biles were not her parents.
