NC ranks second worst in the country in teacher salary

According to a recent WalletHub study, North Carolina is the second-worst state for teachers in the country, ranking ahead of only West Virginia.

Alyssa Gamble of Columbia loves the school where her daughter goes to kindergarten, but worries about what the WalletHub report says about the rest of the state.

The rankings are based on teacher salary rates for the 2014-15 school year and public education investment.

When it comes to a good place to be a teacher, turns out we’re No. 49. They did it as a way to avoid layoffs. “In fact, they’re punished, not just by salary, not just by buying things for the classroom, but by no respect for the job that we do”, Leigh said.

According to WalletHub, underwhelming wages, poor treatment and stress lead to a situation where “about a fifth of all newly minted public-school teachers leave their positions before the end of their first year” – with half of teachers not lasting more than five years. “That is a huge concern”, Maness says. She also said teachers who are tenured should have more pay due to their years being in the system. The court recently gave lawmakers a deadline of February 1, 2016 to come up with a plan to address the problems the lawsuit highlighted.

While South Carolina ranks 45th overall, North Carolina is even worse, ranking next-to-last.

“While that’s a lot of students, nearly the largest in the country in terms of this ratio, at the same time teachers in Arizona are making one of the worst compensations”, she said.
