The college football season is coming to a close and bowl games are nearly upon us. Including assistants, Nebraska would have paid $435,000 in bonuses.
Nebraska has the best 2013-14 April (985) among five-win teams. Witty said contract wording might be tweaked in the future to cover going to a bowl with a losing record. There are 40 bowl games, but only 75 teams with six wins. Its role is to merely certify that the games can be played and to create a standard for teams to be eligible to participate. At 5-6, Kansas State can become bowl eligible with a win over West Virginia on Saturday.
April is the device the NCAA implemented in 2003 to measure school’s student-athlete eligibility and retention for each academic term.

Missouri is in the process of trying to find a replacement for retiring coach Gary Pinkel, who announced two weeks ago that he was stepping down at the end of the season because he has lymphoma. Only three more can get to six wins. Big Ten bowl-eligible teams include Iowa, Michigan State, Ohio State, Northwestern, Michigan, Wisconsin, Penn State and Indiana. Based on Big Ten bowl tie-ins, likely destinations for Nebraska seem to range from the Pinstripe Bowl in New York City (Dec. 26), to the Foster Farms Bowl in Santa Clara, California (Dec. 26), to the Quick Lane Bowl in Detroit (Dec. 28), to the Armed Forces Bowl in Fort Worth, Texas (Dec. 29).
