So far, the majority of Zika cases in the continental United States have been in people who traveled to areas where Zika is prevalent, and none have been caused by mosquito bites.

While the symptoms of Zika are very mild, the virus has been linked to a birth defect called microcephaly, which is an abnormally small head and brain. Mosquitoes can become infected when they bite infected persons and can then spread the Zika virus to other persons they subsequently bite.
