When a child called in to CONAD on Christmas Eve asking where Santa was, man-in-charge Colonel Harry Shoup first thought it was a prank call. Of course, both have plenty of less educational games too, from Google’s elf-filled music maker to Microsoft’s Flapping Bird.

The tradition began in 1955 when a media advertisement directed children to call Santa direct, but the number was misprinted and rang through to the crew commander at the Continental Air Defense Command Operations Center. Shoup assigned a couple of airmen to answer the line and act like St. Nick, Shoup’s daughter Pamela Farrell recounted to StoryCorps.

NORAD replaced CONRAD in 1958, and the tradition has since continued for 60 years.
