Nebraska Punter Sam Foltz Killed In Automobile Wreck Sunday Morning

The fiery crash, in a wooded, rural area of Wisconsin, left Delahoussaye with second-degree burns on his left leg, stitches to his head and bruising around his hips and chest.

Thom Moerman said speed was likely a factor in the single-vehicle crash that happened around 11:45 p.m. Saturday night.

Authorities said that the vehicle was traveling westbound on Beaver Lake Road when the driver lost control on the wet pavement and struck a tree, according to the Journal Sentinel. “We are so grateful for the opportunity we have had to know these men and their families”.

The coach, as well as quarterback Tommy Armstrong Jr.

On Twitter, players used the hashtag #RIP27, which signified Foltz’s number.

Some BTN colleagues and I talked to Foltz last August after a practice in Lincoln.

Both players were working at a kicking camp near Waukesha, Wisc.

“I have a picture of Mike, his laugh, his smile, just everything and his spirit”, Puyol said.

Puyol said he doesn’t seek out accolades and recognition for his good works, but it is gratifying to use his platform to make a difference. It is just to be together. “Our thoughts and prayers are with their families and friends in this time of sorrow”.

The Lincoln Star Journal reports former Michigan State punter Mike Sadler was also killed in the wreck with Foltz.

Michigan State football coach Mark Dantonio said that Sadler’s impact was felt on and off the field. I always say to try and be a light, and he truly was a light in this world.

“We recruited Mike and know him well”. To hear of their deaths was a shock to us all, and it was also a reminder of how fragile life is.

In a few weeks, the Nebraska football team will start practices and the squad will attempt to go on with business as usual.

Foltz was a starter for three years for the Nebraska football team and was awarded the Big Ten’s punter award for the season last year.

“He’d light up a room every time he’d come in”, said Grand Island coach Jeff Tomlin.

As Husker senior fullback Graham Nabity said in prayer during a team vigil: “Lord, you spent your time on Sam”.

“That’s the best punter in America”, Spartan SID John Lewandowski told me, and I wasn’t about to argue.

Nebraska coach Mike Riley and AD Shawn Eichorst issued statements about Foltz.

Foltz, a former walk-on, epitomized the spirit of Nebraska football, according to Riley, from his small-town roots to achievements at a high level.

Dwayne Delahoussaye, Colby’s father, told The Advocate that his son awoke when the auto caught fire.

UNIQUE PROBLEM: With the university still on an academic quarters’ system, Northwestern football players do not begin fall classes until late September. “It’s another great confirmation about why it’s so much fun to coach here, the passion Sam had for this place”. We could all take some of the lessons from their lives and apply them to ours.

Colby and Dwayne are en route to the family’s home near Lafayette.

Foltz was in a auto driven by former Michigan State punter Mike Sadler, who was also pronounced dead the scene. His career average of 42.6 ranks fifth in Nebraska history. Foltz would go on to earn a scholarship before the 2014 season.
