President Obama finally has a Facebook page.

That’s not to say Obama hasn’t had a heavy Facebook presence for years.

Barack Obama joined Facebook and the social media-savvy US President said he wanted his account to be a place where he could have “real conversations” with people as he made his debut with a post on climate change. Either way, awareness about climate change was raised as of yesterday, so the goal was reached.

Last week, Obama cited climate concerns as a key reason for rejecting the Keystone XL Pipeline, saying, “America’s now a global leader when it comes to taking serious action to fight climate change”.

“I say this often, but that’s because it’s always at the front of my mind: We’ve got to preserve this handsome planet”, he continued.

According to the NY Times, there are about 20 people that help Obama run his social media accounts and it is rare that he actually writes his own posts on the sites. Using Facebook as a platform for his campaign was a very clever move, since Barack Obama himself states on his page that three in four adults online use Facebook, making it easier for his voice to be heard.

Similar to the standard for tweets by White House staffers, the Facebook page warns users their posts may be archived.

“I want to make sure that the American people are able to enjoy the incredible national parks, incredible beauty, the mountains, the oceans, that have been one of the greatest gifts we’ve ever received”.

The profile identifies President Obama as “Dad, husband, and 44th President of the United States”, and his timeline contains his oath of office that launched his second term and the swearing-in at the start of his first, as reported by Fortune. At the same time the Facebook page shows that even if he is the most powerful person in the world, Barack Obama is still a person who cares for the same things that we should care about.
