Challenging the Bombay High Court’s order on Udta Punjab, an NGO has approached the Supreme Court on 15 June, seeking a stay on the release of the film.
After days of uncertainty, Bollywood movie “Udta Punjab” will finally hit the screens on Friday, with producers getting the censor certificate on Wednesday evening.
A bench of justices Sunil Gaur and P S Teji directed the movie’s producer, Phantom Films, to “modify” the promos accordingly and ensure that the scene in question is also withdrawn from online sites like YouTube.
Just seconds after leaking, it was available on many torrent sites, but after a while, some of the sites removed it due to a copyright complaint.
The Bombay HC in its order on June 13 had disposed the 89 cuts suggested by the CBFC saying that the board doesn’t have the power to censor. Just two days before of the release, an NGO has appealed Supreme Court questioning the Bombay High Court verdict.
Mahajan said expectations were that the movie will make over Rs 10 crore on its opening day.
“The film has definitely got good publicity”.
According to the censor board, the movie, through its theme of the festering problem of drugs in Punjab, showcased the state in a negative way and was also laced with expletives.
The Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Diljit Dosanjh starrer delves into how a large number of youth in Punjab have succumbed to drugs.

The NGO told a vacation bench of Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel and Justice L. Nageswara Rao that the Bombay High Court, which on Monday had cleared the screening of the film with one cut, could not have interfered with the decision of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
