“I’m sad and I can’t believe it”, Gordon said.

He said his father, a one-time off-road racer, instilled in him a passion for motorsports and competition.

Orange police Lt. Fred Lopez announced the cause of death Thursday in the apparent murder-suicide involving 68-year-old Robert Gordon and 57-year-old Sharon Gordon.

The 47-year-old former race auto driver now participates in off-road vehicle competitions.

The elder Gordon, known by many as “Baja Bob”, was a fixture in the off-road racing scene throughout the last four decades. The police also reportedly do not believe that there was anyone else involved in the deaths and have not issued any report that a suspect is at large. They were the father and step-mother, respectively, of Robby Gordon.

Robby Gordon’s Stadium Super Trucks racing team is scheduled to race at this weekend’s Sand Sports Super Show in Costa Mesa.

A longtime neighbor confirmed that the couple who lived in the home were relatives of former NASCAR racer Robby Gordon. He won three Sprint Cup races in a career that spanned parts of 19 seasons.

Anyone with information on the deaths is urged to call the Orange Police Department at (714) 744-7444.

The younger Gordon had raced in NASCAR, CART, IndyCAr, TRans-AM, IMSA, IROC and Dakar Rally, according to Wikipedia. He almost won the 1999 Indy 500 before running out of fuel in the closing laps. Gordon also raced in the Indianapolis 500 10 times. His wife, Sharon, was the stepmother of the NASCAR driver.
