The game developed into a pitcher’s duel between Mets’ starter Jacob deGrom and Tigers’ hurler Anibal Sanchez, with neither side able to take advantage of numerous opportunities.

The under is 10-3 in the Mets last 13 Sunday games and is 19-7-1 in their last 27 road games while NY are 3-7 in their last 10 overall.

NY will send right-hander Logan Verrett out to face Detroit for the first time when he starts Saturday night against the Tigers. De Aza had a wrap around his right wrist after the game but said he was OK and expects to be ready for his team’s next game.

That decision paid off when Travis d’Arnaud poked a single right to him.

DETROIT (AP) ” Victor Martinez homered and Detroit ace Justin Verlander limited NY to four hits in six innings to help the Tigers to their ninth victory in their last 10 games.

“I think guys in this clubhouse have been around long enough that we do a little bit of scoreboard watching. (Conforto) is not hitting lefties so I put somebody in I thought could get some hits off lefties”, Collins said.

NY trailed 6-1 before rallying with two runs each in the fifth and seventh, and with men on first and second and two out in the ninth, d’Arnaud hit a single to right. Martinez charged the ball, and his one-hop throw home was in time to get Bruce.

Detroit it still just two games behind Cleveland in the AL Central after the Indians lost to the Yankees.

Verlander recorded his fifth consecutive quality start with six strong innings, allowing two runs on four hits, striking out nine and walking one.

“J.D. picked me up big time”, Rodriguez said. “I said, ‘C’mon.’ Fortunately, we caught a break”. He’s 9-and-2. Hisashi Iwakuma goes for the M’s.

“It’s just one of those things”, outfielder J.D. Martinez said. It was Rodriguez’s second career game-ending homer and his 11th home run of the season.

Kinsler followed with a chopper that just got over Blevins’ head and Neil Walker could not field cleanly – he likely doesn’t get Kinsler anyway – and a run scored on the play to even the game at 1-all. Cabrera’s two-run single gave Detroit a five-run lead.

It was 6-3 in the seventh when Bruce came up with men on first and second and nobody out.

Rightfielder Curtis Granderson threw the ball home and, after a couple relays, Martinez was tagged out to end the eighth, with the score remaining tied at 1-1.

Castellanos is hitting.286 with 18 home runs and 58 RBIs.

Martinez came back as a pinch hitter and clubbed the winning home run on the first pitch he saw upon his return, then smoked a double on the first pitch he saw in his first start the following day.

The Mets had the tying or go-ahead run at the plate in each of the final five innings, but hit into a double play in each inning from the sixth to eighth to curtail a rally.

Rodriguez connected off Ross Ohlendorf (5-7), a 413-foot drive to the left-field bleachers that gave the Pirates their second win in seven games in the midst of 12 straight games against teams who are at least 10 games under.500.
