Martinez gave up nine hits and hit two batters in seven innings but was helped by three double plays.

Junior Guerra tossed five innings of three-run ball to up his record to 8-and-3.

After a scoreless inning from Kevin Siegrist in the eighth, Seung Hwan Oh came on in the ninth and got his 17th save.

The Cardinals start the day half a game out of the second wild-card spot in the National League.

Carlos Martinez, who had allowed just five earned runs in his previous four starts, hasn’t been quite as effective on Friday night.

St. Louis Cardinals’ Stephen Piscotty, right, is congratulated byKolten Wong after he drove in Wong with a two-run home run during the third inning against the Milwaukee Brewers in a baseball game Friday, Sept. 9, 2016, in St. Louis. Jimmy Nelson gave up all four runs to take the loss for Milwaukee.

Gennett’s homer, his 11th of the season, was the first Martinez had allowed to any current hitter on the Brewers. “Carlos has been so consistent that you begin to anticipate he’s going to have that kind of outing”.

Nova was dominating at the start, giving up only one hit over the first five innings, as he improved to 5-0 with the Pirates since being dealt by the New York Yankees.

“Defense showed up, for sure”, Piscotty said. He is 1-0 with a 1.88 ERA in two starts against St. Louis this season. “That’s one of the best plays we’ve seen here”, Matheny said.

The homer by Carpenter was his 19th of the season and it was the 21st for Piscotty, increasing the Cardinals’ total for the season to 204.

“I think when you get a lead those tack on runs are a big deal”, Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. It was his fourth straight win and seventh in his past eight decisions as he improved to 14-7.

“It’s just a insane game and stuff happens”, Nelson said. “There’s never really just one answer in this game to anything, whether it’s hitting or pitching”.

After the third, Martinez gave up singles in the fourth, fifth and sixth, along with a hit batter in the sixth.

Garcia talks about the importance of these games in September. “There’s no ground to give up now”. He had movement, so I don’t know exactly how to define tonight’s game. RHP Luke Weaver starts for the Cardinals against Brewers’ RHP Zach Davies on Sunday. The team is hopeful he can be back in the lineup as early as Sunday for the first time since breaking his right thumb when he was hit by a pitch on July 31.

Cardinals: LHP Michael Wacha (right shoulder inflammation) and RHP Trevor Rosenthal (right shoulder inflammation) both had successful bullpen sessions Wednesday. (Even though Gaedel played for the Browns, not the Cardinals, he is of course linked to the team because he borrowed the jersey of Cardinals owner Bill DeWitt, then a batboy, to make his one big-league appearance.) The shortest Cardinal, by the way, is believed to be John Stricker, who was 5-3. The Brewers scored the game’s first run in the top of the first without getting a hit.
